I have always loved mathematics... well, not exactly loved, but rather marveled, been humbled, and reveled in its beauty and utility. I dream of it nearly nightly. Assigning the equals sign is a bit pretentious. That we can find in mathematics a way to measure, describe, model, and predict life in a plethora of mathematical exercises only help us to dance around the depth of our experience. Yes, math has a purity of essence that many cultures have coupled with god(s). Yet, the complex and complicated calculations have left them and us wanting to touch the heart of the universe.
